Carleton Laboratory employs several students as Lab Assistants, both during the semester as well as the winter and summer breaks. We hire both work-study eligible students as well as casual student employees. Generally, hiring occurs at the beginning of each academic semester and the beginning of the summer.

The position of Senior Lab Assistant Carleton Laboratory has been established to provide a chance for advancement of undergraduate Lab Assistants who excel in their position and become a significant asset to the laboratory. Such Lab Assistants may be offered the position of senior Lab Assistant, at the discretion of laboratory management. Furthermore, graduate students not otherwise employed by the University may also apply for the position of Senior Lab Assistant.

Lab Assistant

  • Effort Requirements:
    •   During Semester: 10 to 20 hours, target minimum of 12 hours scheduled
    •   During Summer: 35 hours, unpaid vacation time, pending approval and scheduling
    •   Scheduling:
      •    Monday-Friday, 9:00-17:00 in at least 2 hour blocks for any shift
      •    Hours to remain static from week to week, except during midterm and finals
  • Pay: $22/hour
  • Job Description: Lab Assistant
    •    Assist in large-scale strength of materials testing
    •    Perform small-scale strength of materials testing
    •    Organize, label, inventory lab property
    •    Wash, scrub, sweep, dust, paint, sand, buff, polish, oil, etc.
    •    Assist in administrative tasks, run errands
    •    Help in content control of website
    •    Perform heavy lifting, assist in rigging, heavy testing (after proper training)
    •    Assist in machining of parts on drill, mill, lathe, saws, etc. (after proper training)
    •    Commission and decommission equipment
  • Qualifications:
    •    Must display aptitude for practical tasks
    •    Must show personal initiative and ability to tackle problems independently
    •    Must be detail-oriented and precise in work
    •    Knowledge of Word, Excel, Python (preferred, not required), LaTeX (preferred, not required), LabView (preferred, not required)
    •    Previous experience in laboratory, machining, mechanical work is preferred but not required

Senior Lab Assistant

  • Job Description: Lab Assistant
    •    Same as Lab Assistant, plus following:
    •    Assist training of new Lab Assistants in
      •    performing everyday laboratory tasks
      •    locating tools and safely operating equipment
      •    standard operating procedures in laboratory
    •    Act as team leader of lab assistants in larger projects
    •    Act as liaison between lab assistant corps and management
  • Qualifications:
    •    Same as Lab Assistant, plus following:
    •    12 months of service with the laboratory (B.S. students only, must not be consecutive)
    •    Good attendance and general reliability
    •    Leadership aptitude and proven ability to excel in practical tasks
    •    Show personal initiative and ability to tackle problems independently
    •    Must have experience in common machine tools and testing machines from tenure at Carleton Laboratory
    •    Strong written and oral communication skills in English
