The second objective in the mission of the Carleton Laboratory is the conduct and support of cutting-edge research in all fields of civil engineering, including but not limited to experimental mechanics of materials, structural dynamics, system identification and damage detection, nanomechanics, cementitious and asphaltic materials science, geotechnical engineering, earthquake engineering, and contaminant transport mechanics.

Aside from the traditional material sciences, Carleton Laboratory also houses the graduate research offices and laboratory spaces of the construction management group of the department of Civil Engineering. This group maintains a virtual workspace environment in the Carleton Laboratory, with sister laboratories in Finland, India, and the Netherlands.
