Title: Associate Manager (Staff Associate)

Staff officers of research assist members of the faculty or professional officers of research in the conduct of research or a clinical program. They carry out assigned duties in the design of apparatus, the adaptation of relevant technology to the needs of a project, the conduct of specific experiments, and the analysis of data. They may also be responsible for collecting data and providing services to its clients. Staff officers of research work under limited supervision on complex assignments that require them to exercise a high degree of initiative and independent judgment.

The Staff Associate of the Carleton Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics performs in the capacity of Associate Manager and reports directly to the Senior Staff Associate (Manager). The incumbent will perform daily administrative duties, reconcile project invoices, develop and maintain Laboratory website, develop and enforce safety and training compliance for all laboratory users, maintain regulatory compliance pursuant to OSHA, FDNY, EH&S and EPA, performs all laboratory purchasing and maintain laboratory project budgets, develops and maintains vendor relationships in compliance with University Purchasing policies.

The incumbent will assist the Senior Staff Associate in conducting research and testing of all types of structures, materials, and structural elements, prepares laboratory reports, supports faculty and student research, maintains and updates laboratory equipment and instrumentation, provides community and University outreach through outreach programs, tours, and orientations, mentor, train, supervise undergraduate, M.S. and Ph.D. students performing work in the laboratory.

Serve as acting Manager in the absence of Manager and other duties as assigned. 

The Carleton Laboratory of Civil Engineering and Engineering Mechanics is seeking a Staff Associate in the capacity of Associate Manager of the Carleton Laboratory. The applicant must be a qualified engineer in either the fields of Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Mechanics, Material Science, or a related field.

The duties and responsibilities of this position are:

  • Perform daily administrative duties of the Laboratory in concert with Manager:
    • Submit and reconcile project invoices.
    • Develop and maintain Carleton Laboratory website.
    • Develop and enforce safety and training compliance for all laboratory users
      • Laboratory access database
      • Formal training programs for each piece of laboratory equipment
      • Maintain regulatory compliance pursuant OSHA, FDNY, EH&S, and EPA
    • Perform all laboratory purchasing and maintain laboratory project budgets. Maintain positive vendor relationships to support just-in-time procurement strategy.
    • Maintain certification, calibration, and general maintenance schedule for testing and fabrication equipment.
  • Assist Manager in following duties:
    • Conduct research and testing of all types of structures, materials, and structural elements.
    • Prepare laboratory reports.
    • Support faculty and student research.
    • Maintain and update laboratory equipment and instrumentation.
    • Provide community and University outreach through outreach programs, tours, orientations, etc.
  • Mentor, train, supervise undergraduate, M.S. , and Ph.D. students performing work in laboratory in concert with Associate Manager and Associate Research Scientist
  • Serve as acting Manager in the absence of Manager
  • Pay: $60,000-$70,000/year, contingent on experience

STUDENT POSITIONS

LAB ASSISTANT

Position Availability:

  • Fall 2016: Positions Filled, hiring to start in April

Carleton Laboratory employs several students as Lab Assistants, both during the semester as well as the winter and summer breaks. We hire both work-study eligible students as well as casual student employees. Generally, hiring occurs at the beginning of each academic semester and the beginning of the summer. Current Lab Assistants with a good work record are given rehire priority over new applicants.

The general job description of a Carleton Lab Assistant:

  • Effort Requirements:
    • During Semester: 10 to 20 hours, target minimum of 12 hours scheduled
    • During Summer: 35 hours, unpaid vacation time, pending approval and scheduling
    • Scheduling:
      • Monday-Friday, 9:00-18:00 in at least 2 hour blocks for any shift
      • Hours to remain static from week to week, except during midterm and finals
  • Pay: $14/hour
  • Job Description: Lab Assistant (Class III)
    • Assist in large-scale strength of materials testing
    • Perform small-scale strength of materials testing
    • Organize, label, inventory lab property
    • Wash, scrub, sweep, dust, paint, sand, buff, polish, oil, etc.
    • Assist in administrative tasks, run errands
    • Help in content control of website
    • Perform heavy lifting, assist in rigging, heavy testing (after proper training)
    • Assist in machining of parts on drill, mill, lathe, saws, etc. (after proper training)
    • Commission and decommission equipment
  • Qualifications:
    • Must display aptitude for practical tasks
    • Must show personal initiative and ability to tackle problems independently
    • Must be detail-oriented and precise in work
    • Knowledge of Word, Excel, LabView
    • Previous experience in laboratory, machining, mechanical work is preferred but not required

SENIOR LAB ASSISTANT

The position of Senior Lab Assistant Carleton Laboratory has been established to provide a chance for advancement of undergraduate Lab Assistants who excel in their position and become a significant asset to the laboratory. Such Lab Assistants may be offered the position of senior Lab Assistant, at the discretion of laboratory management. Furthermore, graduate students not otherwise employed by the University may also apply for the position of Senior Lab Assistant.

  • Pay: $16/hour
  • Job Description: Lab Assistant (Class IV)
    • Same as Lab Assistant, plus following
    • Assist training of new Lab Assistants in
      • performing everyday laboratory tasks
      • locating tools and safely operating equipment
      • standard operating procedures in laboratory
    • Act as team leader of lab assistants in larger projects
    • Act as liaison between lab assistant corps and management
  • Qualifications:
    • Same as Lab Assistant, plus following
    • 12 months of service with the laboratory (B.S. students only, must not be consecutive)
    • Good attendance and general reliability
    • Leadership aptitude and proven ability to excel in practical tasks
    • Show personal initiative and ability to tackle problems independently
    • Must have experience in common machine tools and testing machines from tenure at Carleton Laboratory
    • Strong written and oral communication skills in English
